MaCES Awarded California Civic Learning Award 

Maywood Center for Enriched Studies (MaCES) has been presented with the California Civic Learning Award for the 2023 school year and designated with the Distinguished School title. This prestigious award recognizes schools that have demonstrated excellence in promoting civic engagement and preparing students for their roles as active, engaged citizens. MaCES is one of eighteen awardees in the entire state. 


The award reflects the school's commitment to providing outstanding civic learning programs to its students. Principal Gabriel Durán expressed his pride in the school's achievement, "We are honored to receive the California Civic Learning Award. At MaCES, we strive to empower our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become active participants in our democracy. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students in creating a strong civic learning community." 


Assistant Principal Mr. Jose Meza also shared his excitement for the award, stating, "This award recognizes the collaborative effort of our entire school community and reflects our passion and commitment for civic education. Seeing our students and staff receive recognition for their hard work in promoting civic engagement with programs like Roots and Shoots, Interact, Debate, and Biomedical Science." 


The school's Social Science Chair, David Nolasco, who has been instrumental in civic learning, added, "As educators, we are committed to teaching our students to be informed and active citizens. Our school's civic learning program gives our students the knowledge and tools to engage in the democratic process. We recently hosted the ‘Dialogues of Freedom’ event with the Los Angeles Bar Association to speak to our students. Winning the award is a true honor and a validation of our efforts to promote civic education." 


Student Hazel Grande actively participates in the school's civic engagement initiatives. She expresses her excitement for the award, "I am proud to be a part of a school that promotes opportunities for students to get involved. Through our civic learning programs, we have had the chance to engage in community service projects. Winning this award is an incredible achievement to the hard work of our entire school community." 


The California Civic Learning Award is a significant recognition and is part of the state's awards and recognition program, honoring exemplary schools for achievement and advancing excellence in education.
